Španski borci – A Community in Motion. Dance Lives in Moste.

Španski borci Centre for Culture is a vibrant cultural hub in Ljubljana’s Moste district, recognised for its outstanding Slovenian and international programme of contemporary dance and performing arts. Under the artistic direction of En–Knap Productions, one of the key organisations on the Slovenian dance scene, the centre develops a rich programme for diverse audiences—from contemporary art enthusiasts to children and young people. Younger audiences can discover the arts through imaginative workshops, performances, and educational projects that playfully combine dance, theatre, and music.

At Španski borci, contemporary performing practices for all generations meet innovative formats that explore the relationships between movement, space, and audience. The programme is shaped by a diverse range of dance creators—on average 30 programme partners each year—from established dance institutions and independent producers to NGOs, festivals, associations, and independent artists. This network creates a dynamic, open, and cross-genre environment where contemporary, experimental, and socially engaged choreographic practices can emerge.

At the heart of the centre is the En–Knap Group, the first permanent ensemble for contemporary dance in Slovenia, whose productions tour nationally and internationally. Under the management of En–Knap Productions, Španski borci Centre for Culture has become a window into the international world of dance and one of the central meeting points for contemporary dance practices in Slovenia. The centre is embedded in European contemporary dance production networks and, together with partners across Europe, develops regional touring platforms, international co-productions, and European projects that position Slovenian creativity within the wider landscape of contemporary dance.

The Španski borci building, an architectural gem of post-war modernism, was designed by architect Oton Jugovec and is considered one of the important achievements of Slovenian architecture of the 20th century. Built in 1981 and renovated in 2009, it today brings together a rich history and a vibrant contemporary creative pulse. It remains one of the key cultural venues in Ljubljana—a place where art, movement, and community meet every day.
