The aim of the OPUS 1 event is to develop the creativity of young dancers and encourage them to independently create original solo dances or compositions for up to two performers.
The focus is on the dancers’ independent work and on the development of the dance miniature. Mentors are expected to guide the dancers subtly and support them in shaping their own movement expression and choreographic thinking. Over the years, the event has continuously highlighted young dance talents who create original choreographies and captivate audiences with the immediacy and richness of their dance expression.
Many former OPUS participants are now studying dance abroad or have become established professional dance artists.
Each year, a prescribed theme is announced to encourage young dancers to think critically about specific questions and to provide a starting point for exploration, research, and creative work.
Theme for 2026: Intuition of the Body
The body is not merely a physical structure that carries us through life, but also a sensitive compass that knows what is right or wrong for us even before the mind explains it.
When we consciously slow down and become aware of our breathing and bodily sensations, we can begin to perceive the body’s wisdom, reminding us that truth is not found in the noise of the mind but in the whisper of the body. When we listen to it—without forcing it into predetermined forms or patterns—authentic movement can emerge.
Instead of trying to “choreograph” from the mind, we allow the body to lead us. This approach creates a more original and emotionally deeper truth in dance—one that resonates both with the dancer and with the witness.
